A Host of People, and the La Carpa Teen Ensemble, proudly presents ¡Brilla! El Despertar del Alebrije en Mi (¡Brilla! Glow! The Awakening of the Alebrijes in Me) an original, bilingual production inspired by the origin story of alebrijes, the mythical creatures imagined by Mexican artisan Pedro Linares. This playful and powerful performance will run from April 24-27, 2025, at The Senate Theater.

El Despertar del Alebrije en Mi, una producción bilingüe y original inspirada por la historia de cómo surgieron los alebrijes, las criaturas míticas imaginadas por el cartonero Pedro Linares. Esta obra que es tan divertida como poderosa tendrá su corta temporada de Abril 24 al 27 de este año, en The Senate Theater.
In ¡Brilla! Glow!, audiences are transported to 1930s Mexico City, where Pedro Linares, stricken with illness, falls into a fever dream that takes him into Prismatica, a world where alebrijes exist but remain divided by color and ideology. Believing that humans possess infinite wisdom, the creatures battle to claim Pedro as their own. Through his journey, Pedro reveals the struggles and contradictions of the human world, leading the alebrijes to discover that true wisdom lies not in dominance, but in unity, self-acceptance, and collaboration. This vibrant tale explores pressing themes such as race, global warming, and belonging, urging audiences to embrace their own brilliance and collective strength.
En ¡Brilla! El público será transportado a los años treintas en la ciudad de México, donde Pedro Linares gravemente enfermo, tiene un sueño provocado por la fiebre que lo lleva hasta Prismática, un mundo donde existen Los alebrijes aunque divididos por su color e ideología. Con la creencia de que los humanos poseen una infinitamente sabiduría, estas criaturas se disputan a quien le pertenece el humano, Pedro Linares. La Carpa Teen Ensemble has established itself as a vital space for Latiné youth in Detroit to tell their stories through theater. Last year, the ensemble debuted the world premiere of their original work Lost in Our Roots, their first production as an official program of A Host of People. Now, with ¡Brilla! Glow!, they continue to craft compelling narratives that honor cultural heritage while speaking to contemporary issues.
El Grupo de Teatro Juvenil La Carpa se ha establecido como un espacio vital para que los jóvenes Latine en Detroit compartan sus historias por medio del teatro. El año pasado, el grupo presentó la obra original Perdidos en Nuestras Raíces, su primer trabajo como un programa de A Host of People. Ahora, con ¡Brilla!, continúan el trabajo de crear narrativas imperiosas que honran la herencia cultural abordando problemáticas contemporáneas.

Today more than ever, the youth from the Latine community need a space where their voices can be heard through art and community. This play is about choosing light during difficult times and embracing resilience from a place of awe and love. Through comedy and imagination, we revisit history through a lens of color and creativity. I feel incredibly fortunate to work with the youth of Southwest Detroit—they continue to be great teachers, inspiring me to create and share a light that will hopefully spread broadly to better their futures and communities.”

A Host of People is a multi-racial Detroit-based ensemble theater company creating original work for social change that celebrates imagination, complexity, and the synthesis of seemingly disparate elements—at once epic and intimate, political and personal, poetic and approachable. AHOP exists to create aesthetically rigorous, intellectually challenging theater that is warm, welcoming, and inspiring to people from all walks of life. La Carpa Teen Ensemble is a bilingual program of A Host of People, created to center the voices and stories of Latiné youth in Detroit. Through a collaborative creative process, young artists explore their culture, identity, and individual narratives, strengthening their voices and guiding them to embrace their unique light. While focusing on theater arts, La Carpa also nurtures the diverse talents of its participants, providing a platform where they can feel seen, connected, and uplifted. Ultimately, La Carpa seeks to empower youth to illuminate their communities and futures through artistic expression.

El grupo de Teatro juvenil La Carpa es un programa bilingüe de A Host of People creado para resaltar las historias de los jóvenes de la comunidad Latiné de Detroit. Por medio de un proceso creativo donde los jóvenes tienen la oportunidad de aprender sobre su cultura y explorar su propia historia, el programa busca fortalecer sus voces y guiarlos a ver su propia luz interior. La Carpa facilita un espacio donde los jóvenes pueden sentirse vistos, conectados e impulsados. El programa se enfoca en enseñar Artes Teatrales, pero también acoge los talentos individuales de cada participante. Por lo tanto, La Carpa espera que por medio de las artes los jóvenes abracen su voz, iluminen a su comunidad y a sus futuros.
About La Carpa Teen Ensemble Founder & Director Karilú Alarcón Forshee
Karilú Alarcón Forshee was raised in Juárez, México, and is an interdisciplinary artist whose work blends experimental theater, music, and cultural storytelling. Deeply inspired by her roots and the women in her family, Karilú has been a Detroit-based performer and teaching artist since 2011 and a member of A Host of People since 2013. She was recognized as a Kresge Arts Fellow in 2020.Forshee’s work directing youth theater includes collaborations with Living Arts Detroit, University Musical Society, Matrix Theatre Company, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and most recently The Detroit Opera House. She is invested in uplifting the lives of Detroit's Youth through La Carpa and the Bloomberg Arts Internship program she manages for CultureSource.
Karilú Alarcón Forshee es una artista interdisciplinaria originaria de Juárez, México. Su trabajo se enfoca en mezclar teatro experimental, música y narrativas culturales. Profundamente inspirada por sus raíces y las mujeres de su familia, Karilú reside como artista y maestra de artes escénicas en el área de Detroit desde el año 2011 y ha sido parte de A Host of People desde 2013. Fue reconocida por la fundación Kresge Arts en el año 2020. Su trabajo como directora de teatro juvenil incluye colaboraciones con Living Arts Detroit, University Musical Society, Matrix Theatre Company, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit y recientemente The Detroit Opera House.
