‘Every Christmas Story’ told at A Wilde Theatre 12/1-12/17
BRIGHTON, MI–What’s your favorite Christmas movie or story? If you believe in Christmas, almost everyone can be quick to answer with their favorite holiday classic story. Mine? Usually a toss up between A Christmas Story, Elf, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some) at A Wilde Theatre is a delightful, interactive, and uproarious journey through the world of Beloved Holiday Classics (BHCs). It is a festive rollercoaster that takes audiences on a wild and comedic journey through the holiday season. Written by Michael Carleton, James Fitzgerald, and John K. Alvarez, and imaginatively directed by Lynn Wilde Concannon, this production manages to blend classic holiday tales with irreverent humor, making it a refreshing and entertaining addition to the festive lineup.
Lynn Wilde Concannon reunites this talented ensemble cast to tackle a plethora of holiday classics: From Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to the Grinch and beyond to twisting some tales due to possible legality issues and making Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer to Gustave, the green-nosed reingoat. The trio’s performance sparkles with a seamless synergy, where energy, wit, and chemistry collide in a captivating cascade of comedic charm. Ian Campbell, John DeMerell, and Sean Heslip reprise their dynamic trio collaboration from “Guys on Ice,” last November.
The show opens with “John” played by John DeMerell in an elaborate Dickensian coat and hat reciting from A Christmas Carol. “Sean” played by Sean Heslip, dressed as the ghost of Marley repeatedly interrupts complaining that he just can’t perform the tale one more time. “Ian” played by Ian Campbell enters the stage as the ghost of Christmas past, complete with a fruit hat and beard, agreeing that there is definitely more to Christmas stories than just Chuck’s Carol. With the promise to John that they will finish the show with the classic carol, and boy, do they. The three actors immediately prepare to tell every Christmas story ever told, or that can be told in an hour and a half.
The gentlemen showcase their comedic prowess, each bringing a unique flavor to their characters. Their chemistry and camaraderie are evident, creating a sense of shared joy that radiates throughout the audience. Their ability to switch between characters, accents, and genres is a testament to their versatility and comedic timing. The actors manage to balance the irreverent humor with genuine warmth, capturing the essence of the holiday spirit.
The production’s unique charm lies in its inventive use of interactive projection videos, crafted by the imaginative duo of Leon Agan and Jay Timko, alongside the eye-catching graphic design by Josie Eli Herman. These elements add a dynamic layer to the performance, engaging the audience and seamlessly integrating modern technology with the timeless tales, commercials, and holiday tradition tidbits being retold on stage.
Lynn Wilde Concannon’s direction is sharp and imaginative, seamlessly guiding the actors through a fast-paced and dynamic performance. The staging is cleverly designed to accommodate the diverse array of holiday stories, creating a visually engaging experience for the audience. The pacing is lively, and the interactive elements keep the audience on their toes.
Dressed as an elf himself, Daniel Bachelis’s musical direction enhances the festive atmosphere and adds an extra layer of joy to the production, with well-timed musical interludes that enhance the overall festive atmosphere.
Ginny Durow’s choreography injects a burst of energy into the production, creating an element of fun and surprise, elevating certain scenes to comedic heights on the small stage. The actors demonstrate impressive versatility, seamlessly transitioning from one iconic holiday character to another, all while maintaining a high level of comedic timing and physicality. They even don some sparkly tutus for a uniquely unusual tiptoe through a Nutcracker dance.
The creative team behind the scenes deserves accolades for their outstanding work. The props and costume team, including Pat Corr, Julie Michels, Mary Lukowski, Pinckney Players, Harriet Robson, and Brad Rondeau, have contributed significantly to the visual appeal of the play. The attention to detail in both props and costumes adds to the authenticity of each holiday classic being portrayed.
