Detroit Public Theatre presents ‘Detroit ’67’ at Wright Museum 5/11-6/5
DETROIT, MI (April 18, 2022) — Detroit Public Theatre (DPT) is thrilled to continue their commitment to bringing world class theatre to Midtown Detroit with a new production of DETROIT ‘67, by Dominique Morisseau, at and in association with The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The show will run May 11th-June 5th, 2022. Dominique Morisseau serves as DPT’s Executive Artistic Producer, is a native Detroit playwright of international acclaim, the author of two plays on Broadway this season alone, and is a MacArthur Genius Award Winner. The production will be directed by Detroit Public Theatre veteran Brian Marable, who has performed in Morisseau’s work extensively at Detroit Public Theatre and in professional regional theatres across the country.
In this thought-provoking and timely masterpiece, set in Detroit in 1967, Motown has hit its groove and the Poindexter siblings, Chelle and Lank, are making ends meet by hosting parties in their basement. However, Lank and his friend Sly have dreams beyond the cellar shindigs. When Lank brings home a mysterious white woman, the family’s simmering disagreements explode—as the streets erupt.
“We are so thrilled to bring a new world class production of Dominique Morisseau’s timely masterpiece DETROIT ‘67 to The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History,” said DPT Producing Artistic Director Courtney Burkett. “We are honored to be partnering on this production with The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Public Theatre has produced DETROIT ‘67 twice before: as part of our inaugural season in 2016, and in 2017 as a citywide tour. No play better encapsulates the type of work we hope to do and the stories we want to tell at DPT. This production is a great opportunity for us to reintroduce DPT to Detroit audiences, and to invite our community to come back and see more of our work when we open our new home in Midtown this fall.”
