DEXTER, MICH.–Fun Home begins Encore’s 12th season, starring Dan Cooney (Producing Artistic Director, Broadway: Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables, 9 to 5); Wilde Award winner Sarah B. Stevens  (Encore: Sweeney Todd, 9 to 5, Crazy For You); and new comers Laura Austin (“21 Jump Street”, City Center, Redhouse Arts Center) and Grace Allyn (Connecticut Rep). 

Directed by Vincent J. Cardinal (Current Michigan Musical Theatre Chair, previous Artistic Director of Connecticut Rep) and music director by Wilde Award winner Tyler Driskell.

Fun Home is a musical adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie) from Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir of the same name, and the winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical. 

When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
