Dominique Morisseau has lived away from Detroit for nearly 15 years, but her cell phone still has a 313 area code.
“I never really thought about changing it,” says the playwright, who now shuttles between Brooklyn, N.Y., and North Hollywood. “I guess I don’t consider those other places home.”
That sentiment is fitting for the 38-year-old writer, whose voice and Detroit roots grow louder and more visible every day. She’s part of the writing team behind the Showtime TV series “Shameless,” and her name is also above the titles of three Detroit-themed plays, the first of which, “Detroit ’67,” makes its Motor City debut May 13 at the Detroit Public Theatre.
