Read The Freep on “Matilda” at The Fisher

Other Voices March 13, 2016

It only makes sense that 5-year-old Matilda Wormwood — a math whiz, a voracious reader and wise beyond her years — would be the subject of a play at least as smart as she is. The title character of Matilda, a 1988 children’s book by Roald Dahl, steals hearts in “Matilda the Musical,” the 2013 Broadway hit that plays through March 20 at the Fisher Theatre.

The show focuses on Matilda’s first semester in an oppressive English primary school, where her new teacher, Miss Honey (Natalie Wisdom), recognizes how gifted Matilda is on the first day of class. The girl can recite multiplication tables seemingly to infinity, and she also has devoured a stack of books in just the past week, among them “Nicholas Nickleby” and “Jane Eyre.”
