Read The Freep about Eric Gutman’s “From Here to Obscurity”
You have perhaps seen him onstage at the Tipping Point, Jewish Ensemble and Meadow Brook theaters. But unless you’re fond of poring over Playbill bios, you might not know that Eric Gutman spent three years performing in “Jersey Boys,” the mega-hit musical show about ’60s pop band the Four Seasons, during its Broadway run and first national tour. He logged nearly 1,200 performances in the show’s ensemble and covered for some of the leads before chucking it all to head home to Michigan to raise a family.
Gutman shares his successes and frustrations on and off the stage in From Broadway to Obscurity, a one-man show presented by the new Detroit Public Theatre, whose space in the roomy Allesee Rehearsal Hall of the Max M. Fisher Music Center has been greatly improved. The company’s fall production of American Hero was plagued by sight-line problems, but as a result of a new tiered, horseshoe-like seating arrangement, the audience is now able to watch productions from three sides of the stage.
