It's not too late: Sign up now for Matrix School of Theatre classes

DETROIT - There are still openings for the classes at Matrix School of Theatre. Sign up now and learn all about storytelling, play writing, acting, puppetry and performance in an exciting array of classes for youth ages 5 - 18.

"We're really excited about what we've developed for this year's program," said Matrix education director Andrea Scobie. "Along with our traditional acting classes, we've added some new and innovative activities that are really going to inspire the kids."

Class prices range from $50 - $100. Inquire about discounts if your child is enrolled in multiple classes, or if you have multiple children attending a class. Scholarships are also available.

ACTING

Ages 5-7

Ages 8-11
CLASS: Being on Stage
DATES: Class ends – Dec. 8
DAYS/TIMES: Tuesdays/Thursdays, 4 – 6 p.m.

COST: $100
Elementary aged students will use theater and storytelling to explore what living in Detroit means to them. Through poetry, play writing, and performance, they will look ahead and create dreams for a better, brighter future for Detroit and its residents. Students will present their work at the Dec. 8 School of Theatre Showcase performance.

Ages 11-14
CLASS: Acting Is...
DATES: Class ends – Dec. 8
DAYS/TIMES: Tuesdays/Thursdays, 4 – 6 p.m.

COST: $100
Middle school writers and performers will come together to create a new work about their hopes and ideas for improving our city. Using music as a springboard, they will explore stories within song lyrics, how they relate to us on a personal level, and use those ideas to express what they imagine in the future of the City of Detroit. A new play or performance piece will be presented at the Dec. 8 School of Theatre Showcase.

Ages 14-18
CLASS: Haunted Theatre
DATES: Class ends – Oct. 31
DAYS/TIMES: Mondays/Wednesdays, 4 – 6 p.m.; occasional extra rehearsals TBD

COST: No cost, thanks to the generous support of the Skillman Foundation
This annual Halloween thriller is written, designed, produced, and performed by members of the Matrix Teen Company who work together to create a horror story based on myth, folk tales, and urban legends. Company members turn the theater into a scary space sure to frighten everyone brave enough to attend this popular event! Participation in the Matrix Teen Company is by audition only.


PUPPETRY

Ages 5-7
CLASS: Detroit Dreams
DATES: Class ends – Dec. 8
DAYS/TIMES: Saturdays, noon – 1:30 p.m.

Young puppeteers explore the world of dreams as they learn to craft and create puppets of all kinds. Each week students will explore their dreams of Detroit through the weekly creation of snow globes, clothes-pin puppets, and dream journals.

Ages 8-18
CLASS: Frog Belly Rat Bone Puppets and Props
DATES: Class ends – Dec. 8
DAYS/TIMES: Saturdays, 10 a.m. – noon
LOCATION: Matrix Theatre Company, 2730 Bagley St., Detroit, MI 48216
COST: $75
Students in this all-ages production class will create puppets and props for the Matrix School of Theatre Spring 2013 play, "Frog Belly Rat Bone." "Frog Belly Rat Bone" is the story about Cementland, a place of ruined buildings as far as the eye can see. When a young boy finds a seed, he and his friends build Frog Belly Rat Bone - a giant who will protect their treasure and allow Cementland to be transformed. Young artists will strengthen and refine their art and construction techniques by creating items that will appear onstage in the 2013 spring production. Please note that projects created in this class will not be taken home.
