UDM Theatre Company announces 42nd season

DETROIT - The Theatre Company at University of Detroit Mercy announces its 2012-2013 season. Continuing its primary commitment to bringing thoughtful, high-quality professional theater to the Metro Detroit community for 42 years, The Theatre Company's 42nd season will include "None of the Above," "The Empire Builders," "Wings" and "A Cabaret of Theresa Rebeck's Plays."

The Theatre Company at University of Detroit Mercy offers students of the Performing Arts Department the rare opportunity to work on and off stage with theater professionals. By working with professional directors and associate guest artists, students are encouraged to work at a high level, producing rapid growth throughout their undergraduate education.

Take advantage of the UDM Theatre Company's best ticket offer and get season tickets to all four shows for only $50 for regular subscribers or $45 for discount subscribers (seniors, donors, alumni, Detroit residents and UDM and Marygrove faculty and staff), a savings of 40-percent off adult admission ticket prices. Back by popular demand is the Student Flex Pass for any full-time student currently enrolled in high school, community college or university. The Student Flex Pass is $20 and gives students access to unlimited performances of all four shows, a savings of nearly 75-percent off regular adult ticket prices. A student picture ID is required to purchase a Student Flex Pass.

Individual ticket sales begin Sept. 1. Admission to the 2012-2013 season will be $20 for adults and $17 for seniors, donors, alumni, Detroit residents and UDM and Marygrove Faculty and Staff. Student individual tickets are $10.

The Theatre Company's performances of "None of the Above," "The Empire Builders" and "Wings" will be at the Marygrove Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols Rd., Detroit. "A Cabaret of Theresa Rebeck’s Plays will be performed in the Grounds Cafe in the lower level of the UDM Student Union Building on the UDM McNichols campus, 4001 W McNichols Rd., Detroit.

On non-performance days, the UDM Theatre Company's box office is located in Reno Hall room 43 on the University of Detroit Mercy campus. Hours of operation are noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. On performance days the box office will open 45 minutes prior to curtain.

None of the Above
In which situation does affluent, high school senior Jamie, who bombed her first attempt at the SAT as a result of academic apathy, become enlightened by an unsympathetic tutor named Clark, resulting in an unusual pact between two unlikely partners in crime? A Faustian bargain directed by Arthur J. Beer. A snappy new comedy by Jenny Lyn Bader, "None of the Above" will run Oct. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 at the Marygrove Theatre.

The Empire BuildersFrench novelist, composer, poet and playwright Boris Vian invites us to observe a world where the DuPont family allows fear of the unknown to overtake their human experience. Through a combination of pure anxiety, tense humor and unbridled aggression, Leon DuPont fears for his family's life as he forces them to flee from an unseen terrifying threat. In a progression of mounting terror and the blackest of comedy, the family releases their frustration in a frightening hysterical fashion. Directed by Theater Company alum Kate Peckham and featuring John Manfredi, "The Empire Builders" will run Nov. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 at the Marygrove Theatre.

Wings
Arthur Kopit's Wings explores the strange, terrifying and shattered world of Emily Stinson, who is suddenly faced with the desperate need to comprehend and make sense of her surroundings, her physical being and of her own mind. Emily must face the frustrating and deeply disturbing challenges of her new life as a stroke patient. "Wings" is an emotionally powerful experience, a magnificent adventure into the mind and a revelation of the strength and mystery of the human spirit. Directed by David L. Regal, "Wings" will run Feb. 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 2013 at the Marygrove Theatre.

A Cabaret of Theresa Rebeck's Plays
Currently one of the hottest playwrights of our time, Theresa Rebeck's work over the last decade has received Emmy and Pulitzer Prize nominations and has won Edgar Allen Poe and Writers Guild of America awards. The current executive writer on NBC's "Smash," Rebeck's works are swimming with intimate conversations centering on present day drama in family relationships. Directed by the faculty of The Theatre Company and featuring students and faculty, "A Cabaret of Theresa Rebeck's Plays" will be full of drama and will offer the audience many humorous outlets on topics that affect us all. "A Cabaret of Theresa Rebeck's Plays" will run April 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 in the Grounds Cafe in the lower level of the UDM Student Union Building.
