Performance Network's mid-year appeal: It takes a community to make great theater

ANN ARBOR - Performance Network Theatre, Ann Arbor's only professional, Equity theater, recently launched its Mid-Year Fundraising Campaign to generate all-important operating revenue for the organization. As a nonprofit, PNT raises only half of its operating income from ticket sales; the rest comes from grants, business sponsorships and contributions from individuals, making fundraising drives like the current one crucial to the theater's bottom line. The goal is to raise $50,000 by Aug. 15.

"I hear from audience members every day how excited they are about the plays they see at Performance Network," said development director Christina Mooney. "They comment that what they've seen on our stage is equal to or better than the same shows they've seen in New York or London. That is huge for our community. We want people to know that it takes their donations to keep the quality high and the magic onstage alive. It really does take a community to create great theater."

In an intimate 139-seat space located at the corner of Huron St. and Fourth Ave., Performance Network produces Broadway-caliber shows, employing professional set and lighting designers, directors and actors. In its seven-show season, the theater reaches 20,000 attendees annually.

PNT promotes new plays and regional playwrights through its "Fireside Festival," a four-night series featuring table readings of new plays. The series has been expanded to three times annually. It also reaches elementary-aged children through its Children's Theatre Network that consists of children's shows in the theater, as well as touring programs that reach 15,000 students throughout Southeast Michigan, many from underserved populations.

Performance Network Theatre also offers corporate sponsorships, which include benefits such as playbill ads, networking events, and complimentary tickets and receptions. Individual sponsorships are also available, beginning at only $9 a month.
